Born in a poverty-stricken family, 25-year-old professional photographer Achmad Zulkarnain has now become one of the most popular photographers in the Indonesia and also an inspiration for many throughout the world.
A law student, Zulkarnain had his first tryst with a camera four years ago to reduce the burden on his father as he made a measly income from working at a motorcycle repair shop.
Dzoel made money taking pictures of his community members for identity cards in his village in Banyuwangi in Java.
Soon he realized his heart was in photography.
His mother gifted him a camera and soon he started learning professional photography techniques.
Here’s a 4-minute feature on Zulkarnain that was just aired by Al Jazeera English:
Whether it is nature photography or wedding photoshoot, Zulkarnain, also lovingly called Bong Dzoel or ‘funny brother’ by his colleagues, is flooded with assignments throughout the year and makes anywhere between 70-80 pounds per shoot.
Eventually, he started going out to photo-hunts and events to click pictures. “It was definitely not an easy journey. There were challenges but I was determined to face them”, says Dzoel.
He tells once he felt from a cliff while shooting a waterfall, but instead of checking bruises on his body, what he checked was his camera. He says that he loves his camera really very much.
He thanks his fellow photographer friends for their continuous support. He says that his friends are always available when he needs them.

“I am not disabled…just different from others”
He thanks his mother for all, whatever he is today, as she is the one who inculcated in him the belief that he was capable of doing anything and living a normal life.
Zulkarnain now hopes to infuse similar confidence among people like him and show them a way to live their life without any guilt.
