“Take a journey into the world of possibilities. You will be amazed with your adventure.”
Travel photographer Brijesh Tiwari has been traveling around the world for last 12 years. Here we present you with his travel story from Greenland in his own words.
When I was kid I used to see the Map of world and curious about the big white Island known as “Greenland “
And the time comes to unravel the mystery, because you were meant to discover the world!
We started our planning for this trip in Jan 2015 (yes it’s correct 15 month before). Our master planner Mr. Kaushik Shil worked like anything day and night for this trip. Created a Whatsapp group with 3 people and I added one of my friend Nitesh. We wanted to go with even numbers Coz that make it easy for day to day sharing accommodation and transportation. Then one of our founder members Sanjay dada withdrew as his leave was not approved by company and so we decided to add 2 more people in that group and working on that. Final outcome was me, Nitesh, Shriharsh Kaushik and Kaushik Shil. The common link was me Rest of the three never had never meet each other before. Even I had never met kausik Shil. For the First time we met at Delhi airport. We started our journey from Delhi-Paris-Copenhagen
We stayed in Copenhagen for 2 nights and explored the city and visit the small Swedish town Malmo. After 2 days we took a flight from Copenhagen to Ilulissat via short break (28 hrs.) in Kangerlussuaq.
The town is known for its airport, which is Greenland’s major international transport hub. The airport’s Kangerlussuaq Museum illustrates the town’s past as a U.S. airbase during WWII. A road runs northeast from town to the vast Greenland Ice Sheet. Here, Russell Glacier is a vantage point for ice-calving events
For the First time in life I saw an Entire airport become no men land in the afternoon. Even when we were there were no security checks while flying from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. It’s really felt like heaven where everyone is free and happy.
After staying in Kangerlussuaq we flew to Ilulissat with Air Greenland. I can’t explain in the words when we saw first time big iceberg floating in the sea in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobs’s haven, is a town in the Qaasuitsup municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. On a trip to Ilulissat Ice fjord, you can experience the biggest glacier outside of Antarctica, as well as a giant ice fjord and enormous mountains of ice. (House and Ilulissat town)
Our Itinerary for Greenland was like this.
We did 5 hour dogsled tour to Nalluarsuk a small fiord next to Kangia glacier in Ilulissat ice fiord, which has safe sea ice most of the winter. Going over the top of Big Akinnaq Mountain and reach the viewpoint at Nalluarsuk, all the way to the ice sheet. The dog sledge is one of the strongest icons of Greenland. An Inuit tradition, dating 2000 years back in time! You will not find many other means of transportation, which has survived for so long without any changes. The basic principle is still the same as in the Viking age; some dogs tied to a simple construction of wood. The experience cannot be explained just in words .Dog Sledding in in Greenland is the most difficult to capture. You will be on Another Sledge and its running average speed of 30 mile /hrs with Zero visibility and temperature is average -20 degree Celsius with constant ups and down in an uneven terrain.
Keeping an eye on the sky every night and hope that the Northern Lights will dance across it tonight. We faced the bad weather throughout the trip. Clouds were following us every day somehow we were blessed to see the magical northern lights first time in life.
3-Aerial View of Glaciers
We took a 6 seater small flight to see the Arial view of Entire ice fjord and glacier.
- Walking across Blue / Yellow Route was one of the major highlights of the trip
- We had taken a trip to Russel Glacier and adjoining areas of Kangerlussuaq too.
