Earlier Google announced that it would discontinue the development of the Nik Collection. Acquired by Google back in 2012, the Nik Collection was a popular assortment of photo editing tools and plugins for Mac and Windows. Google released the software suite for free last year. DxO has just announced that it has acquired Nik Collection from Google and will continue development “for the benefit of the photographer community.”

“The Nik Collection gives photographers tools to create photos they absolutely love,” Google Engineering Director Aravind Krishnaswamy said of the news. “We’re thrilled to have DxO, a company dedicated to high-quality photography solutions, acquire and continue to develop it.”

The current Nik Collection is now available for free through the DxO website. The package contains 7 desktop plugins for Photoshop and Lightroom.

  • Analog Efex Pro: Applies film-era camera, lens, and film simulations to digital images
Color Efex Pro: A comprehensive set of filters for color correction, retouching, and creative effects
Dfine: Noise reduction software for camera-specific digital images
HDR Efex Pro: Specialized program for processing HDR pictures
Sharpener Pro: Image sharpening for digital images
Silver Efex Pro: Black & White conversion of images with darkroom-inspired control
Viveza: Selectively adjusts image color and tonality without complicated masks or selections

DxO will let the Nik Collection remain free for now while working on a new version to launch in 2018. The set of Lightroom and Photoshop plugins was once priced around $500, but Google eventually dropped the price to free after picking it up along with the powerful mobile photo editing tool Snapseed in 2012.

The announcement comes with the company’s latest update to DxO OpticsPro RAW converter, which has been re-named to DxO PhotoLab and adds local retouching tools thanks to Nik U Point technology.upointtech-734x800
